Two Children Freeze to Death in Detroit While Living in Van
A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Detroit as two young children, aged 2 and 9, died from suspected exposure to freezing temperatures while living in a van with their family, police reported.
Van Runs Out of Gas in Freezing Temperatures
The mother parked the van in a casino parking garage around 1 a.m. Monday, but it ran out of gas, leaving the family without heat as temperatures plummeted to 12°F with a wind chill of 6°F.
The children were found unresponsive around noon by their mother, who first rushed one child to the hospital with the help of a family member before realizing the second child was also unresponsive. Both children were pronounced dead at the hospital, with initial findings suggesting they froze to death.
Three Other Children Survive
Three other children in the van survived, and authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Detroit Police Capt. Nathan Duda expressed deep sorrow, saying,
"As a father, I just can’t imagine what this family is going through."
Call for Community Support
Authorities are urging families in need to seek help from shelters, churches, and local resources. Duda also encouraged the public to call 911 if they see someone struggling in the cold.
"We’ll show up with all the right people to provide shelter, food, and warmth. We do care," Duda emphasized.
This tragic loss highlights the dangers of extreme winter conditions and the urgent need for community awareness and support for those experiencing homelessness.
