The political and diplomatic rift between India and Bangladesh has intensified, leading to significant cultural and economic consequences. The recent exile of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the subsequent destruction of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi neighborhood have become symbolic of the worsening relations. The house, a key site in Bangladesh’s liberation struggle, was torn down by students, erasing an important part of the nation’s history.
Following Hasina’s departure in August 2024, India swiftly suspended visas for Bangladeshi nationals, initially impacting medical patients seeking treatment in Kolkata. The suspension of travel services, including buses and train routes between the two nations, disrupted the movement of thousands. Kolkata’s business districts, once popular among Bangladeshi tourists, witnessed a significant decline in visitors, leading to losses in retail, restaurants, and garment trade.
The strained ties also resulted in the halting of cultural exchanges. For the first time in 28 years, Bangladesh did not have a dedicated stall at the Kolkata Book Fair. Cross-border artistic collaborations, including Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti performances, and theatre productions, came to a halt, further straining the historical connection between the two nations.
Meanwhile, the political instability in Bangladesh has fueled the rise of Islamist groups, such as Hizbut Tehrir and Jamaat-e-Islami, which are gaining ground. Visible signs of growing religious extremism include the banning of music at social events, attacks on artists, and increased restrictions on cultural expressions. The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government’s directive to Hindu communities to avoid playing musical instruments during Durga Puja celebrations, coupled with reports of attacks on minorities, signals a shift towards religious hardline policies.
The deteriorating relations have created a deep-seated divide, with both nations experiencing rising majoritarian sentiments. Given the current hostilities, cultural and diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh remain uncertain, with little hope of immediate reconciliation.
