Union Minister of Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, revealed that India will soon host the popular DeepSeek AI model, developed by a Chinese startup, on Indian servers to address privacy issues. This move is part of India's broader strategy to bolster its AI capabilities, with Vaishnaw also announcing plans to develop the country's own foundational AI model in the coming months.
In addition to this, Vaishnaw highlighted the creation of a common computing facility with 18,693 graphics processing units (GPUs) to enhance AI development. The government also plans to establish an AI safety institution to further secure the growth of AI technology in the country.
The announcements come on the heels of India's ambitious AI push, with the IndiaAI mission receiving over Rs 10,300 crore in funding. The initiative aims to support AI startups and develop a robust AI infrastructure. Vaishnaw referenced the success of the DeepSeek R1 model, noting its impact on the AI domain and echoing remarks by OpenAI’s Sam Altman, who had questioned India's ability to develop a significant AI model.
DeepSeek R1, known for its efficiency in complex reasoning tasks, has gained significant traction in the AI space, even surpassing OpenAI's ChatGPT on the Apple App Store. Vaishnaw's comments reflect India's growing determination to be a global leader in AI development.
