Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the United Arab Emirates, will begin a two-day official visit to India on Tuesday, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced Monday. This marks the first official visit to India by Sheikh Hamdan in his capacity as Crown Prince and will include meetings with top Indian leadership as well as engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral economic and strategic cooperation. Accompanied by several UAE ministers, senior government officials, and a high-powered business delegation, Sheikh Hamdan's visit signals a renewed push to deepen the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
According to the MEA, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host a working lunch for the visiting dignitary on Tuesday. The Crown Prince is also scheduled to meet with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to explore areas of cooperation ranging from defense and security to cultural and people-to-people connections. Following his engagements in New Delhi, the Crown Prince will travel to Mumbai, where he will attend a business roundtable involving leading Indian and Emirati business leaders. This roundtable aims to identify opportunities for collaboration in traditional sectors like energy, trade, and infrastructure, as well as emerging sectors such as fintech, AI, and renewable energy.
Strengthening Long-standing Ties
A statement from the MEA noted:
“Traditionally, Dubai has played an important role in India's commercial, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges with the UAE. The majority of India’s approximately 4.3 million-strong diaspora in the UAE resides and works in Dubai.” The visit is expected to further solidify diplomatic and commercial links between India and Dubai, while reaffirming the strong presence of Indian businesses and expatriates in the UAE. This visit follows EAM S. Jaishankar’s trip to the UAE earlier this year, from January 27 to 29, during which he extended the Prime Minister’s invitation to the Crown Prince. After the meeting, Jaishankar shared on social media:
“Delighted to meet Crown Prince of Dubai and DPM and Minister of Defence of UAE HH Hamdan Mohammed. A warm conversation on our deep bonds of friendship and taking them forward for the good of our people.” His post underscored the strategic alignment and mutual goodwill between the two nations, especially as both countries move forward with ambitious economic and cultural exchanges under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement signed in 2017.
India and the UAE continue to share close cooperation in areas like energy, trade, defense, investment, technology, and counterterrorism, and this visit is expected to further elevate these synergies. As the visit unfolds, attention will be focused on the potential announcements or agreements that could pave the way for deeper business engagement and broader collaboration between the Gulf region and South Asia’s largest economy.
