The integrity of the Taekwondo competition at the National Games has been questioned after allegations emerged that results were fixed in advance for 10 out of the 16 weight categories. In response to these claims, the National Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) has replaced the director of competition, T Praveen Kumar, with S Dinesh Kumar following strong recommendations made by a three-member committee formed to prevent manipulation of the event. The GTCC chairperson, Sunaina Kumari, stated that the committee's suggestions were vital for upholding the integrity of the competition and ensuring a fair environment for all athletes.
The decision to replace the director was supported by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), with president PT Usha condemning the alleged pre-decided outcomes, calling it "shocking and sad" that National Games medals might have been decided before the competition even started. Usha emphasized that the IOA is committed to protecting athletes from unethical practices and ensuring fair competition. She further underlined the importance of upholding the spirit of sport and providing all athletes with an equal opportunity to showcase their talent on such a significant national platform.
Following the complaints, the Prevention of Manipulation of Competition Committee (PMCC) made several recommendations to prevent further disputes and enhance the credibility of the games. These included replacing at least half of the nominated technical officials with qualified ones, ensuring the entire competition is video-recorded for transparency, and placing GTCC-nominated officials at the venue to reduce the chances of manipulation. The allegations also included specific details about the financial demands for securing medals, with a reported asking price of Rs. 3 lakh for a gold medal, Rs. 2 lakh for silver, and Rs. 1 lakh for bronze. The Taekwondo events in Haldwani are scheduled to take place from February 4-8, with 16 Kyorugi and 10 Poomsae competitions set to be held.
