The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called an urgent meeting of its Apex Council to appoint former Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Jyoti as the electoral officer for upcoming elections to fill the positions of secretary and treasurer. These posts were vacated by Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar, who assumed new roles in December. According to the BCCI constitution, the Board must call a Special General Meeting and appoint an electoral officer at least four weeks before the elections are held.
The 71-year-old Jyoti, a retired Gujarat cadre IAS officer, served as the Chief Election Commissioner from 2017 to 2018. Currently, Devajit Saikia is serving as the interim secretary, while the treasurer’s position remains vacant.
The BCCI, which saw its financial health strengthen this year, has reported a significant increase in its cash reserves. The Board’s total earnings reached approximately Rs 20,686 crore, a rise of about Rs 4,200 crore from the previous year. A major contributor to the BCCI’s revenue is the sale of IPL media rights, which were secured for Rs 48,390 crore for a five-year period. The BCCI is projected to continue its financial growth, with expected earnings of Rs 10,054 crore for FY24-25.
