On Thursday, both houses of the Indian Parliament were temporarily suspended as opposition lawmakers disrupted proceedings for the third consecutive day, demanding a discussion on the serious bribery allegations against the Adani Group. U.S. authorities have accused Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and Adani Green’s managing director Vneet S. Jaain of paying $265 million in bribes to secure Indian solar power supply contracts. Additionally, they are accused of misleading U.S. investors during fundraising efforts.
The opposition Congress party, led by lawmakers such as Manickam Tagore, has been vocal in its demands for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address these allegations in Parliament. The accusations have sparked widespread protests, with opposition leaders accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of favoring Adani and blocking investigations in India. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has even called for the arrest of Gautam Adani in light of the scandal.
Despite the ongoing uproar, the government has refrained from commenting directly on the U.S. indictment. BJP spokesperson Gopal Krishna Agarwal emphasized that the party does not need to defend Adani and that the law should take its course. The BJP maintains its stance that industrialists, including Adani, are essential partners in the country's economic development.
