In response to the confirmation of avian influenza in Andhra Pradesh, the Telangana government has issued a warning to poultry farmers and blocked the entry of poultry from the neighboring state. The decision comes after a bird flu outbreak was reported in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, where authorities established a red zone around the affected area.Approximately 24 check posts have been set up along Telangana’s Nalgonda district border to prevent the entry of poultry from Andhra Pradesh. Officials are turning back vehicles carrying chickens from the neighboring state as part of the measures to curb the spread of the H5N1 avian influenza virus, in alignment with central government guidelines.
The outbreak in Andhra Pradesh was first detected at Ramakrishna Poultry Farm in Kanuru Agraharam village, where over 1,500 chickens were culled after the virus was confirmed. Authorities declared a one-kilometre radius around the farm as a red zone and a 10-kilometre radius as a surveillance zone. Additionally, the sale of chickens and eggs was banned within the red zone to prevent further spread. In response to the situation, medical camps have been set up to monitor the health of local residents, and authorities have urged people to report any unusual symptoms such as fever, cough, or diarrhea. Officials are also advising the public not to panic but to remain vigilant and report any unusual bird or animal deaths.
In Telangana, where poultry farming is a significant industry, authorities have heightened surveillance and issued warnings to farmers. They are conducting meetings with poultry industry representatives to raise awareness about the preventive measures needed to combat avian influenza. The Animal Husbandry Department has sent a team of experts to East Godavari to help contain the outbreak, and officials have urged the public to cooperate with the containment efforts to prevent the virus from spreading into Telangana.
