Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz faced a tough challenge in his first match since his quarter-final loss at the Australian Open. In the opening round of the Rotterdam Open, the top seed battled against local hero Botic van de Zandschulp, ranked 81 places below him, to secure a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-1 victory. The match lasted nearly three hours.Alcaraz admitted to feeling nervous at the start, which led to some early mistakes and allowed van de Zandschulp to take control of the match. Despite the local favorite's strong play, Alcaraz managed to fight back in the first set. After saving a set point at 5-4, he forced a tie-break and claimed it 7-3, showcasing his resilience.
The second set saw van de Zandschulp capitalize on uncharacteristic errors from Alcaraz, breaking his serve and leveling the match at 1-1. However, in the deciding set, Alcaraz regained his form, breaking van de Zandschulp early and ultimately winning 6-1 to seal the match.Alcaraz acknowledged that his performance was "up and down" and vowed to work on his weaknesses for the next round. His victory puts him in the second round of the tournament, where he will continue his quest to become the first Spaniard to win the Rotterdam Open.The tournament also saw other top players progress, including Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, who overcame a tough match against Stan Wawrinka, and Australia’s Alex de Minaur, who defeated David Goffin. Andrey Rublev also advanced, beating Zhang Zhizhen.
