The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a "red" alert for several regions, including Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Raigad, in anticipation of extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds. This alert indicates a serious risk of severe weather, prompting local authorities to prepare for potential disruptions. The alert is set for Wednesday, extending into Thursday, when neighboring states such as Gujarat and Goa are also expected to experience heavy rainfall.
In the official release, the IMD noted that the Konkan and Goa regions, along with Madhya Maharashtra, will face intense weather conditions. The warning includes the potential for very heavy rainfall in Saurashtra and Kutch as well. The Sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal and Sikkim are also likely to see extremely heavy rainfall, while eastern states and northeastern states, including Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, are on alert for very heavy rainfall.
On September 25, Pune experienced intense rainfall, accumulating significant totals throughout the day, with Chinchwad leading the tally at 13 cm. Other areas such as Shivaji Nagar and Wadgaonsheri recorded 12 cm and 7 cm, respectively. The Marathwada region also faced heavy rains, particularly in Washi, which recorded 12 cm of rainfall. In northern Goa, Pernem saw 19 cm of rain, while other locations like Sawantwadi, Palghar Agri, and Malvan reported significant totals.
As a result of the recent downpours, water levels in Mumbai's seven lakes have surged to 99% capacity, raising concerns about potential flooding and water management. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and follow local advisories as the weather continues to evolve.
