The high-stakes Delhi Assembly elections have commenced, with over 1.56 crore electors casting their votes across 70 constituencies in a single phase. A total of 13,766 polling stations have been set up across 2,696 polling locations. Employees in both government and private sectors in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana have been granted a paid holiday due to the elections.As voter turnout is expected to be a decisive factor in this election, all eyes are on Delhi’s electorate. In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, voter turnout was recorded at 62.59%, while the 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw a lower turnout of 56%.
Polling will continue until 6 p.m. today. A total of 699 candidates are contesting the election, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress fielding 70 candidates each, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded 68 candidates, including two seats for their allies JD(U) and LJP. In the prominent New Delhi constituency, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal aims to retain his seat against BJP's Parvesh Sahib Singh and Congress's Sandeep Dikshit, the sons of former Chief Ministers.The AAP is looking to secure a third consecutive term, focusing on its governance and welfare schemes, while the BJP and Congress aim for a resurgence in the capital.
