Concerns over campus safety at the University of Houston are growing as students adjust their routines in response to recent attacks. Reports of robberies and assaults near key campus locations have left many feeling uneasy, prompting calls for increased security measures.
Students on Edge Following Crime Reports
One student shared how recent incidents near the Welcome Center Parking Garage and the METRO station have heightened fears. “Many students walk back to their dorms late at night, sometimes across campus, and that’s where another robbery just happened. It puts everybody on edge,” she said. Some students who previously parked in well-traveled areas have since altered their routines to prioritize safety.
Despite the campus being active with students, poor lighting and a limited security presence remain major concerns. “The area near the library is very dark, and past the fountain, it’s even worse. You really have to rely on a buddy system,” one student explained. Additionally, students noted a lack of visible security patrols, questioning whether enough is being done to ensure their safety.
Calls for Stronger Safety Measures
While emergency call stations are installed across campus, students feel they aren't enough to prevent crime or provide immediate help in dangerous situations. Many are urging university officials to improve lighting, increase security patrols, and implement stronger safety initiatives to protect students. With concerns growing, students are hoping for swift action to create a safer environment for all.
