On Wednesday, the Sleeper Vande Bharat Express completed its first trial run from Mumbai Central Railway Station to Ahmedabad. The train ran at a speed of 130 km/h and covered the distance successfully. However, the train will undergo several more trials before its final deployment, including tests in Rajasthan and other regions under North Railway (NR). According to a senior official from Western Railways (WR), the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) is conducting a Confirmatory Oscillograph Car Run (COCR) trial of the train, which will include additional trials in different zones.
The train departed from Ahmedabad at 7:29 AM and arrived in Mumbai at 1:50 PM, later departing again for Ahmedabad at 2:45 PM. Officials confirmed that after the trials, the RDSO will submit its report to the Railway Board, which will then finalize the train’s deployment and route.
In recent trials, the Vande Bharat sleeper train reached a peak speed of 180 km/h, with successful tests conducted between Kota and Laban in Rajasthan. The Vande Bharat sleeper train will have several advanced features such as AC-3 and AC-2 tier coaches, a first AC coach, charging ports, foldable snack tables, and improved lighting and seating arrangements. Furthermore, the train will comply with fire safety standards and offer amenities such as Braille navigation for visually impaired passengers.
The Railway Safety Commission will also evaluate the maximum speed of the train once the trials are complete. It is expected that the certification will be issued next week, and following that, the train’s route and service deployment will be decided.
