In a video posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), delivered a strong message to US President-elect Donald Trump, warning him against any plans to annex Canada. Singh, who was once an ally of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, stated unequivocally, “Our country (Canada) is not for sale. Not now, not ever.”

Singh went on to express Canadian pride, emphasizing the nation’s unity and commitment to defending its sovereignty. “We are proud people,” Singh declared, adding that Canadians would “fight like hell” to protect their land. The NDP leader also took the opportunity to boast about Canada's role as a good neighbor, pointing to the support Canadian firefighters extended to the United States in the wake of the devastating Los Angeles fires, which have claimed at least 24 lives.

In addition to defending Canada's sovereignty, Singh addressed the issue of trade, particularly the potential imposition of tariffs by the US. He warned of retaliatory measures should President Trump take such actions, saying, “If Donald Trump thinks, if you think you can pick a fight with us, there will be a price to pay.” Singh advocated for similar retaliatory tariffs if the US imposes any against Canada, stressing that any leader running for Prime Minister should adopt a similar stance.

This strong response came after Trump made several controversial statements suggesting Canada’s potential annexation into the United States. Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, claiming that many Canadians wanted Canada to become the 51st state. In a Christmas post, he outlined the supposed benefits of such a merger, including tax cuts and enhanced military protection.

In early December, following Justin Trudeau’s resignation, Trump renewed the idea, suggesting that a merger would eliminate tariffs, cut taxes, and offer better security against global threats, particularly from Russia and China.

Justin Trudeau swiftly rejected Trump’s proposal, saying, “There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.” He further emphasized that both countries benefit from their strong trade and security partnership, with shared values and interests.

As tensions around this issue rise, Canada’s political leaders, including Jagmeet Singh, continue to assert the country's independence and readiness to stand firm in the face of external pressure.
