A Life of Service
Before entering politics, Carter was a peanut farmer and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He went on to become governor of Georgia and later served as U.S. president from 1977 to 1981. Carter was the only former president to reach 100 years of age.
Honoring His Legacy
Plans for a state funeral include public ceremonies in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private interment in Plains, Georgia. The Department of Defense’s Joint Task Force–National Capital Region will oversee the arrangements.
