The Lok Sabha will hold a two-day debate starting today to mark 75 years of the Indian Constitution, though tensions are high between the BJP and Congress, which are embroiled in a bitter political war. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will kick off the debate for the BJP, with several MPs from the ruling party and allies, including Karnataka's former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, expected to speak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will respond to the debate and opposition attacks on Saturday evening, signaling the BJP’s strategic approach to counter opposition allegations.
The BJP is likely to focus on the Congress’s historical record, particularly the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and attack the opposition's claims about potential constitutional changes. Modi had earlier accused the Congress of undermining democratic values during the Emergency. Additionally, the BJP aims to address the opposition's "fake narratives" from the recent federal election, where fears about constitutional alterations were raised.
On the other side, Congress will be led by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is making her debut speech in Parliament. The Congress party is expected to focus on the Adani issue, which has been a major point of contention between the opposition and the government, leading to frequent disruptions in parliamentary sessions.
While the Congress maintains its focus on Adani, some of its allies, including the Trinamool and Samajwadi Party, have expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing squabbles, which they believe disrupt effective governance. Other opposition figures, including members from DMK and Trinamool, are also expected to speak, with particular interest in Mahua Moitra’s speech.
The debate will also feature opposition calls to "save the Constitution," contrasting their views with the BJP's governance. Both the BJP and Congress have issued three-line whips to ensure full attendance during the debate, which will continue in the Rajya Sabha next week under the leadership of Amit Shah.
