Justice Sanjiv Khanna Appointed as Next Chief Justice of India

Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been officially appointed as the next Chief Justice of India, set to take office on November 11, 2024. The announcement, confirmed by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, comes after receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu. Justice Khanna, currently the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, will succeed CJI DY Chandrachud, who is retiring on November 10, 2024.

This appointment follows the convention of the retiring Chief Justice recommending their successor, typically the next senior-most judge. Justice Khanna, who will be the 51st Chief Justice of India, has a career in the judiciary that began in 2005 with his promotion to the Delhi High Court. He became a permanent judge there in 2006 and was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019.

Throughout his tenure, Justice Khanna has authored 117 judgments, covering a range of topics including criminal, civil, constitutional, and arbitration law. Notably, he has served on significant benches addressing pivotal issues such as the abrogation of Article 370 and the validity of the electoral bond scheme. His term as Chief Justice will last approximately seven months until his retirement on May 13, 2025.
