In a tragic discovery over the weekend, the Lewisville Fire Department’s dive team recovered a body from Copperas Branch Lake, located just west of I-35E. According to the Lewisville Police Department, the recovery occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Sunday. The deceased individual is believed to be the driver involved in a single-vehicle crash that happened early Saturday morning.
The incident unfolded around 3:30 a.m. Saturday near the 2900 block of the northbound lanes of Interstate 35E. Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation indicate that a vehicle veered off the roadway, crashed through a guardrail, and plunged into Copperas Branch Lake. Authorities currently believe no one else was in the car at the time of the accident.
Copperas Branch Lake, though smaller in size compared to nearby Lake Lewisville, sits just across from it and is adjacent to the highway. Emergency response teams, including the specialized dive unit from the Lewisville Fire Department, were deployed following initial reports of a submerged vehicle. After extensive search efforts, divers located and recovered the body of the suspected driver from the lake.
While the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed publicly, officials have stated that the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct the formal identification process and will be responsible for notifying the next of kin. The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.
Local authorities are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information relevant to the crash to come forward. Officer Rosales of the Lewisville Police Department is currently handling inquiries related to the case. Citizens can reach out directly by calling 972-219-3600 or emailing Mrosales@cityoflewisville.com. For those who wish to share information anonymously, Denton County Crime Stoppers can be contacted at 1-800-388-TIPS (8477).
The crash and subsequent recovery have cast a somber tone over the Lewisville community, a city that frequently sees traffic due to its proximity to major highways and recreational lakes. Such accidents serve as a reminder of the unpredictable dangers associated with late-night driving and the risks posed by losing control on highways near bodies of water.
Authorities continue to gather details to piece together a fuller picture of what transpired in the early morning hours on Saturday. At this time, there is no indication of foul play, and no additional victims have been identified. The investigation is ongoing as officials await the results of the medical examiner’s report. Until then, the community mourns what appears to be a tragic and isolated incident, and emergency services remain committed to uncovering the full sequence of events leading to the fatal crash.
