Eric Dane Reveals ALS Diagnosis, Will Return for Euphoria Season 3

Eric Dane Reveals ALS Diagnosis, Will Return for Euphoria Season 3
Eric Dane, the accomplished actor widely recognized for portraying Dr. Mark Sloan in Grey's Anatomy and Cal Jacobs in HBO's Euphoria, has publicly revealed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a serious and progressive neurodegenerative disease. At 52 years old, Dane opened up about his condition in a recent interview, emphasizing the support he's receiving from his loved ones during this deeply personal health journey.

ALS, also referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually robbing individuals of voluntary muscle control. As the disease progresses, it leads to severe physical impairments, including the inability to speak, eat, or breathe without assistance. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, Dane has expressed resilience and gratitude, particularly for his family’s support during this uncertain time.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is known for its unpredictable and often aggressive nature. It typically begins with subtle symptoms, such as muscle twitching or weakness in limbs, and escalates to a point where even basic physical functions become impossible without help. There is currently no cure for ALS, and the prognosis is often grim, with half of those diagnosed passing within 18 months. Nevertheless, some patients defy the odds and live with the condition for many years. The late physicist Stephen Hawking famously lived with ALS for decades, offering hope and awareness around the disease. Although the average life expectancy post-diagnosis is around 27 months, each case is unique, and advances in medical support continue to improve quality of life for many.

Despite his diagnosis, Dane remains committed to his career and has confirmed that he will return to the set of Euphoria for its upcoming third season. He described feeling fortunate to still be able to work and shared his anticipation for rejoining the production. He also kindly requested privacy as he and his family navigate the challenges ahead. Filming for the new season is already underway, and Dane is expected to resume his role imminently.

In Euphoria, Eric Dane plays Cal Jacobs, a character whose intricate emotional layers and turbulent past have become central to the show’s narrative. Cal is the father of Nate Jacobs, portrayed by Jacob Elordi, and their strained relationship forms one of the core storylines in the series. Dane’s portrayal has earned praise for its depth and authenticity, as it delves into themes of repression, identity, and generational trauma. His continued involvement in the third season will provide continuity to a show that has seen its share of cast changes and production delays.

The third season of Euphoria has faced several setbacks due to industry-wide disruptions, including strikes by writers and actors, as well as script revisions and scheduling conflicts. Initially expected in 2025, the show’s release has now been moved to 2026. The upcoming season will feature a significant time jump of approximately five years, transitioning the storyline from high school life to early adulthood. This creative shift aims to explore more mature themes and character development beyond their formative teenage years.

Zendaya, who plays the lead role of Rue Bennett, has expressed her hope to further explore Rue’s sobriety journey in the new season. This storyline is partially inspired by the life of Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, offering a personal and raw exploration of addiction recovery in adulthood. Other main cast members returning for Season 3 include Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, and Jacob Elordi. Dominic Fike will also return in his role as Elliot. However, not all familiar faces will reappear. Storm Reid, who played Rue’s younger sister Gia, has confirmed she will not return, and Barbie Ferreira exited the series in 2022.

Eric Dane’s return as Cal Jacobs ensures that one of the show’s most compelling character arcs will continue, despite the personal health challenges he now faces. His openness about his ALS diagnosis brings important visibility to a disease that remains under-discussed in public discourse. At the same time, his determination to continue working serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and dedication in the face of adversity.

As fans of both Dane and Euphoria await the return of the show, many are sending their support to the actor and his family. His contribution to television, particularly through roles that challenge emotional and societal norms, continues to resonate. While the future may hold many unknowns, one thing is certain—Eric Dane remains a force both on-screen and off.
