Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake Kills Over 1,000; India, US, EU Offer Aid Amid Widespread Destruction

In a devastating natural disaster, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck northwest Myanmar on Friday afternoon, triggering widespread destruction and a mounting death toll that has already crossed 1,000 across Myanmar and Thailand. The epicenter was located near Sagaing, a region in central Myanmar, at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers — intensifying the seismic impact. Within minutes, the main quake was followed by a powerful 6.7-magnitude aftershock and a series of smaller tremors that further rattled the already shaken region.Th e quake’s shockwaves were felt far and wide — reaching cities across India, parts of southern China, and extending to Cambodia and Laos. Buildings swayed, people ran for safety, and emergency alarms sounded as residents across national borders felt the earth tremble. In Myanmar’s Mandalay region, entire buildings crumbled into rubble and twisted metal, while critical infrastructure like the historic Ava Bridge — a nearly century-old structure spanning the Irrawaddy River — collapsed into the water.

Myanmar Appeals for International Help as Emergency Services Struggle

With Myanmar still reeling from a prolonged civil conflict since the military coup, the country’s already weakened emergency infrastructure was quickly overwhelmed. Rescue operations were launched by local volunteers, soldiers, and residents digging through debris with limited equipment. The dire situation prompted the military junta to issue an unusually open appeal for international assistance. Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing called for aid from “any country, any organisation,” in what is being seen as a rare diplomatic opening from a regime largely isolated on the global stage. Responding promptly, India offered immediate support, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing deep concern and solidarity.

“Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance,” PM Modi stated, adding that the Indian authorities have been asked to remain on standby. India’s response was swift. The Indian Air Force dispatched a relief operation from its Hindon air base near Delhi, sending 15 tonnes of emergency aid — including tents, blankets, water purifiers, and vital medical supplies — to Myanmar. The Ministry of External Affairs has remained in active contact with both Myanmar and Thailand to coordinate further assistance and monitor the situation, especially concerning Indian nationals.

Thailand Also Hit; High-Rise Collapse Kills Workers Near Bangkok

In neighboring Thailand, the tremors had equally tragic consequences. The most severe damage occurred near Bangkok, where a high-rise under construction collapsed in the bustling Chatuchak market area. At least 10 people were confirmed dead, and over 100 workers are feared trapped beneath the wreckage. Emergency response teams have been working around the clock to locate and rescue survivors. The Thai government, under newly elected Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, held an emergency cabinet meeting late Friday to assess the national impact and coordinate relief. While structural damages were reported across several regions, officials confirmed that the Indian embassy in Thailand has not reported any casualties among Indian citizens. The embassy has issued advisories, urging caution and preparedness among residents and travelers.

International Support Grows Amid a Humanitarian Emergency

In addition to India, other global powers have begun offering support. The European Union has pledged humanitarian aid, and US President Donald Trump confirmed that Washington is in direct contact with Myanmar authorities. “It’s a real bad one, and we will be helping,” Trump told reporters during a press briefing. Rescue and recovery efforts are being hampered by blocked roads, damaged communication infrastructure, and a lack of heavy machinery in rural regions. International organizations, including Red Cross teams, have also begun mobilizing personnel and resources to assist on the ground.

With aftershocks continuing to rattle the region, experts have warned of further geological activity. Authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant, avoid damaged buildings, and prepare for potential evacuations. As Myanmar and Thailand grapple with this catastrophe, the world is watching closely. The disaster not only exposes vulnerabilities in emergency preparedness but also highlights the importance of international cooperation in the face of large-scale humanitarian crises. For now, the focus remains on saving lives, treating the injured, and providing shelter to the thousands displaced by this tragic event.
