On Monday, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy issued directives to ensure free sand supply for houses being built under the state’s ‘Indiramma’ housing scheme, which focuses on providing homes for economically weaker sections. During a review meeting on mines and mineral development, Reddy instructed officials to supply sand at reduced rates for the general public while ensuring that beneficiaries of the housing scheme receive it free of charge.
In addition, the Chief Minister called for stringent measures to combat illegal sand mining and black-market activities, commonly known as the “sand mafia.” Reddy emphasized the need for thorough inspections and strict enforcement to tackle sand smuggling operations in the state. To aid enforcement, special officers will be appointed to monitor irregularities in sand distribution, and District Collectors and Superintendents of Police (SPs) will oversee regulatory measures.
The Indiramma Housing Scheme is a major welfare initiative by the state government, aiming to provide affordable housing to the underprivileged. As part of the scheme, house pattas (land titles) will be distributed in the name of women, further supporting the government's commitment to women’s empowerment and social security.
