A senior Democratic senator has accused Kash Patel, former President Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI Director, of secretly orchestrating the removal of FBI officials while under oath denying any knowledge of such plans. Senator Dick Durbin, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has urged the Justice Department's Inspector General to investigate Patel's alleged involvement in directing the firings of senior FBI personnel. Durbin claims whistleblowers have provided credible information that Patel, though a private citizen with no formal government role, has been relaying orders through White House officials to remove career FBI employees.
“If these allegations are true, Mr. Patel may have perjured himself before the Senate Judiciary Committee,” Durbin stated in his letter.
According to reports, Patel’s instructions were passed to acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove via White House officials, demanding personnel changes at the FBI similar to those already carried out at the Justice Department. Notes from a high-level meeting reportedly reference Patel’s initials, indicating his push for "reciprocal actions" within the FBI.

Patel’s spokesperson has dismissed the claims as false, asserting that Patel is a highly qualified national security expert committed to transparency. "Kash Patel has demonstrated the integrity and leadership needed for this role," the statement read, urging the Senate to confirm him without delay.
However, during his confirmation hearing, Patel explicitly stated under oath that he was "not aware of any plans or discussions" to remove FBI personnel involved in investigations related to Trump. His testimony is now under scrutiny following revelations that just one day after his hearing, the acting FBI Director was reportedly ordered to remove eight senior FBI officials and provide a list of all agents involved in January 6 investigations.
