In a surprising legal resolution, Meta has reportedly agreed to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit filed by former U.S. President Donald Trump over his social media bans following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
According to reports, $22 million from the settlement will fund the non-profit organization managing Trump’s future presidential library, while the remaining amount will cover legal fees and other expenses. The Wall Street Journal was the first to break the news of this agreement.
This settlement comes as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other top tech leaders work to strengthen ties with the newly inaugurated Trump administration. Reports suggest that Zuckerberg met with Trump at his Florida estate in November, leading to negotiations that ultimately resulted in the settlement.
Meta has also made headlines by donating $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee and reversing its fact-checking policies—a move long advocated by Trump and his allies. Zuckerberg was seen among other high-profile executives, including Google’s Sundar Pichai, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk, at Trump’s recent swearing-in ceremony.
Trump’s legal battle with Meta was part of a broader push against major tech and media companies. In a separate case, ABC News reportedly settled a defamation lawsuit by contributing $15 million to Trump’s presidential library following inaccurate statements made by anchor George Stephanopoulos regarding a civil ruling in the E. Jean Carroll case.
Trump has also filed lawsuits against CBS News and The Des Moines Register, accusing them of misleading coverage that he claims amounts to election interference. Both media outlets have denied any wrongdoing.
