ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) has successfully completed the integration of the liquid propulsion system for the Crew Module of Gaganyaan, India's first human spaceflight mission. On January 21, 2025, ISRO dispatched the Crew Module to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota for further processing and integration.
This uncrewed mission, known as Gaganyaan (G1), is a crucial step in ISRO's efforts to acquire human spaceflight capabilities. The Crew Module is equipped with the Crew Module Propulsion System (CMPS), a bi-propellant-based Reaction Control System (RCS) designed to maintain precise control over the module during its descent and re-entry phases. This system uses 12 100N thrusters to control Pitch, Yaw, and Roll movements.
The Crew Module also features a specially designed Crew Module Uprighting System (CMUS) from Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). Following this, the module will undergo additional integration at VSSC, including avionics, electrical harnessing, and final checks before being dispatched to the U R Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru for the final integration of the Orbital Module.
This marks a significant milestone for ISRO as it works towards launching the Gaganyaan mission with crewed spaceflight capabilities in the future.
