A case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been detected in Bengaluru, India, with an eight-month-old child testing positive for the virus, according to reports . The child is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru and has no travel history. The Karnataka Health Department has confirmed the case.
HMPV is similar to COVID-19 and can cause respiratory disease in people of all ages, especially among young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically appear three to 10 days after infection and include flu-like signs such as cough, blocked nose, runny nose, sore throat, and breathing difficulties.
In response to the outbreak, several states in India, including Delhi, have issued advisories to mitigate the spread of the virus. Delhi health authorities have made strict isolation protocols and universal precautions mandatory for suspected cases.
