In a significant statement made in the Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the need for peace and tranquility in the border areas as a prerequisite for improving bilateral ties with China. He emphasized that both nations will engage in discussions on de-escalation and managing activities in these areas in the near future. Jaishankar shared that disengagement has been fully completed in eastern Ladakh, particularly in the regions of Depsang and Demchok.
Jaishankar reiterated India's stance on three key principles: the strict observance of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), avoiding any unilateral attempts to alter the status quo, and adherence to past agreements. He emphasized that while India-China relations had progressed in many areas, recent tensions had negatively impacted the relationship.
The Minister noted that now that disengagement had been achieved, the focus would shift towards discussing de-escalation and managing troop movements along the LAC. He also added that national security would remain India's top priority in these talks. Jaishankar’s statement came after Indian and Chinese troops completed the disengagement at the last two face-off points in eastern Ladakh, ending the over four-year military standoff.
Following the statement, a brief uproar occurred in the Rajya Sabha when Opposition MPs sought clarifications, which were disallowed by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. This led to the walkout of Opposition members in protest.
