In a significant development in Tamil Nadu politics, the ruling DMK has dismissed actor-politician Vijay's newly launched political party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), labeling his ideology as a mere imitation of their own policies. DMK leader TKS Elangovan stated, "These are all our policies; he is copying... whatever he says is what we had already said and which we are following," as reported by the Press Trust of India.
Vijay made headlines during his debut public appearance, where he criticized the DMK's leadership, particularly targeting the party's first family. He accused them of "cheating people... in the name of the Dravidian model" and claimed, "One family is looting the state" through "underhand dealing."
In response to Vijay's assertions, Elangovan emphasized that the DMK has faced numerous rivals throughout its political journey, asserting that the party is well-equipped to handle challenges from newcomers. He remarked, "This is the first conference, and let us see; we have seen many parties."
Vijay expressed that his party would embrace the ideals of Dravidian icon Periyar, particularly focusing on social justice and women's empowerment. He also named other influential figures like Kamaraj, B.R. Ambedkar, and freedom fighter Velu Nachiar as inspirations for his party's vision. However, he clarified that while they would adopt Periyar's principles, they would not align with his stance against religion, stating, "We are against nobody's faith."
Elangovan underscored the DMK's historical commitment to fighting for people's rights, contrasting it with what he perceives as TVK's opportunism aimed at gaining power within a short span of time. He remarked, "Unlike leaders of the DMK, TVK leaders would not fight for people by going to jail. That is the difference between DMK and other parties... we are strong, we work for the people."
AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan extended his congratulations to Vijay for entering politics but noted that he has a considerable journey ahead to prove his mettle in the political arena.
