The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) issued a statement saying, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the team’s best efforts throughout the night, Vinesh was just a few grams over the weight limit this morning. The Indian contingent requests respect for Vinesh’s privacy at this time as the team focuses on upcoming competitions.”
Initial reports indicated that Phogat was approximately 100 grams over the allowable weight. According to the competition rules, this small overage means she will not be eligible for a silver medal, leaving only gold and bronze in her weight class.
