Punjab's political landscape is witnessing growing uncertainty as Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa has claimed that over 32 MLAs from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are in touch with him. Bajwa further suggested that even more could be communicating with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), indicating that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government may be on the verge of collapse.However, Bajwa clarified that the Congress would not play a role in destabilizing the government. Instead, he alleged that the BJP was working towards engineering defections within AAP’s ranks.
"It is not just MLAs; there are ministers and other senior leaders who are dissatisfied. But we have made it clear that the Congress will not be responsible for bringing this government down. The BJP will do that," Bajwa said in an exclusive interview.He also claimed that AAP leaders are frustrated over alleged corruption, particularly money being funneled through hawala networks from liquor and land deals. Bajwa accused AAP of misusing funds, alleging that “thousands of crores have gone to Australia and other states through illicit transactions.”
AAP, in response to Bajwa’s claims, accused the Congress leader of secretly negotiating a switch to the BJP.
"Pratap Bajwa has already secured his ticket in BJP. He met senior BJP leaders in Bengaluru," said AAP leader Neel Garg. He also urged Congress leadership to monitor Bajwa’s activities closely, suggesting that he might soon leave the party.The political turbulence follows AAP’s severe electoral setback in Delhi earlier this month, which has intensified internal party scrutiny. To counter mounting opposition pressure, the Punjab government has launched a large-scale anti-corruption drive, fulfilling one of its key election promises.As part of the crackdown, Punjab authorities recently dismissed 52 police officers, including inspectors and constables, on corruption charges. Additionally, Varinder Kumar, a senior IPS officer, was removed from his post as the chief director of the Vigilance Bureau and reassigned to the police headquarters.
In another high-profile move, Sri Muktsar Sahib’s Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Tripathi, a 2016-batch IAS officer, was suspended, with the Vigilance Department initiating an inquiry against him.While the AAP government remains under intense scrutiny, the uncertainty surrounding its stability continues to grow. If the claims of defection prove true, Punjab could see a major political realignment in the coming months, with BJP potentially making inroads into the state’s power structure.
