Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde tendered his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Tuesday following the results of the assembly elections. Despite a significant victory for the Mahayuti coalition, which includes the BJP, Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, the decision on who will succeed Shinde as the new CM remains uncertain.
Accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, Shinde visited the Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation. Governor Radhakrishnan asked Shinde to continue as a caretaker CM until a new leader is chosen and sworn in. The alliance, which secured a resounding victory with 230 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, has yet to reach a consensus on the new CM despite the overwhelming majority.
Shiv Sena leader Deepak Kesarkar confirmed the resignation and stated that the new government will be formed soon. When asked about the next CM, Kesarkar emphasized that although every political worker hopes for a CM from their own party, the final decision will be based on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, which will be acceptable to everyone.
The political suspense continues as the Mahayuti leaders await a decision on the next chief minister, with many speculating on potential candidates from the victorious coalition.
