The naval base at Rambilli is being designed with underground pens and tunnel networks to discreetly house nuclear-powered submarines. From there, they can access key maritime corridors like the Malacca Strait, a vital route for global trade and defense logistics. This move comes at a crucial time when China is increasingly asserting its presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). By establishing a major eastern base, India aims to strengthen its naval posture and ensure strategic dominance across both sides of the peninsula. The Rambilli base complements the Karwar naval base in Karnataka, which is undergoing upgrades under Project Seabird to berth up to 32 warships. Together, these dual-coast developments represent a significant boost to the Indian Navy's blue-water capabilities.
