According to US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Indian nationals accounted for 72.3% of all H-1B visas issued between October 2022 and September 2023. This data was presented in the Rajya Sabha by Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs. The minister highlighted the crucial role of Indian professionals in the US technology and innovation sectors, reinforcing India's significance in the skilled migration landscape. He also noted ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure a stable H-1B visa policy that benefits Indian workers and their contributions to the US economy.
As Indian professionals continue to dominate skilled migration to the US, challenges persist for students in conflict zones. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar provided updates on Indian students affected by ongoing global conflicts. Before the war in Ukraine, approximately 21,928 Indian students were enrolled in Ukrainian universities. However, as of November 1, 2024, only 1,802 students remain, with many forced to relocate or put their education on hold. In Israel, about 900 Indian students, primarily in STEM-related PhD or postdoctoral programs, were present at the time of the October 7, 2023, attacks. In response, the Indian government initiated 'Operation Ajay' to evacuate Indian nationals, successfully repatriating 1,309 individuals, including 768 students. Many have since resumed their education in Israel. Meanwhile, officials confirmed that there are no Indian students currently residing in Palestine.
