On the 77th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with Congress leaders, paid floral tributes to the freedom fighter at the Vidhana Soudha in Bangalore. The CM was joined by Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, MLAs, and other dignitaries. Reflecting on the significance of the day, Siddaramaiah recalled Gandhi’s teachings on tolerance, unity, and equality, stressing that the ideals Gandhi left behind should guide the country. He pointed out that Gandhi had always promoted respect for all religions, and that India’s unity in diversity was a principle advocated by both Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in the Constitution.
Siddaramaiah also took the opportunity to criticize certain political forces, particularly the BJP and RSS, for their approach to the nation’s federal system and Constitution. The CM accused these groups of trying to undermine the Constitution and shift India towards a single religion, language, and culture, a stance Gandhi and Ambedkar had opposed. He further criticized the BJP and RSS for their admiration of individuals who played a role in Gandhi’s assassination, claiming that they were disrespecting the values Gandhi stood for.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, recognizing his ideals and recalling the sacrifices made by all those who fought for India's independence. India observes Martyrs' Day on January 30, commemorating both Gandhi’s assassination and the sacrifice of countless freedom fighters.
