Dr. Jyotirmay S. Hegde from Bengaluru's Aster Whitefield Hospital reports a noticeable spike in such complaints during heatwaves. He explains that when the air indoors is dry and hot, it strips moisture from the nasal passages, increasing irritation and the risk of respiratory symptoms.
Studies have shown that dehydration further worsens the situation by reducing moisture in mucosal tissues. During hot nights, the body loses fluids through sweating, which thickens mucus and causes congestion. Many mistake this for cold air effects, but it is actually a result of heat and dryness.
To mitigate these symptoms, experts recommend keeping hydrated and ensuring proper indoor humidity. Using humidifiers and drinking fluids can help maintain moisture in the respiratory tract. Avoiding direct airflow from fans and air-conditioning can also prevent excessive dryness.
Adapting to these changes can greatly improve comfort and reduce ENT discomforts caused by nighttime heat during India's severe summers.
