On Friday, a motion to suspend opposition members from the parliamentary panel discussing the Waqf Amendment Bill was passed after protests and allegations of hasty proceedings. BJP's Nishikant Dubey moved the motion, which was supported by the committee, resulting in the suspension of several opposition members, including Kalyan Banerjee, Mohammad Jawed, A Raja, Asaduddin Owaisi, Naseer Hussain, Mohibullah, Mohamed Abdullah, Arvind Sawant, Nadeem-ul Haque, and Imran Masood.
The protests stemmed from concerns that the committee's chairman, Jagdambika Pal, was rushing through the proceedings without giving enough time for thorough discussion. Opposition members argued that they were not provided sufficient time to review the proposed amendments to the bill. BJP’s Aparajita Sarangi condemned the opposition's actions, calling their conduct “disgusting” and accusing them of disrupting the meeting and using inappropriate language against the chairman.
The committee's session began on a contentious note, with opposition leaders alleging that the BJP was fast-tracking the Waqf Amendment Bill for political gain ahead of the Delhi elections. After a heated exchange, the meeting was briefly adjourned. Following the adjournment, a delegation led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chief cleric of Jamia Masjid Srinagar, presented its views on the bill.
The Mirwaiz-led delegation expressed strong reservations about certain provisions of the bill, particularly its impact on the management and autonomy of Waqf properties, which are vital for the welfare of underprivileged Muslims. Meanwhile, opposition members Kalyan Banerjee and Naseer Hussain walked out of the meeting in protest, calling the proceedings a "farce."
The opposition members also requested a delay in the scheduled meeting on January 27 to allow for more time to review the proposed amendments. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in August 2024 and seeks to amend the Waqf Act, 1995, to address existing challenges in the regulation and management of Waqf properties.
