Gangapuri Maharaj, also known as Chhotu Baba from Assam's Kamakhya Peeth, has become a major attraction at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The 57-year-old, who stands at 3 feet 8 inches tall, has gained attention for his unique lifestyle, as he has not taken a bath for 32 years.
"This is a Milan Mela—a gathering where souls connect. That’s why I am here," Baba told ANI on Friday. Expressing his happiness about participating in the Maha Kumbh Mela, he said, "I am 57 years old and happy to be here. Seeing you all here also makes me happy."
Explaining his vow, Gangapuri Maharaj said, "I have not taken a bath in the last 32 years because of an unfulfilled wish. I will not bathe in the Ganga until my wish is fulfilled."
The Maha Kumbh Mela, celebrated every 12 years, is expected to witness a massive turnout of devotees in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26. To ensure the safety of pilgrims, the district administration has implemented several measures, including advanced technological tools for crowd management and fire prevention.
Key initiatives include deploying Quick Response Vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), firefighting robots, and fire mist bikes. Additionally, firefighting boats that utilize river water to extinguish fires will be operational within a week, according to officials.
The Prayagraj division of North Central Railway has also embraced modern technology to simplify the ticketing process for pilgrims. Dedicated railway personnel, easily identifiable by their green jackets featuring a QR code, will assist travellers at Prayagraj Junction and other key locations. Pilgrims can scan the QR code using their smartphones to download the UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) mobile app, enabling them to book unreserved tickets without waiting in long queues.
The administration’s efforts aim to ensure a safe and seamless experience for the millions of devotees expected to attend this grand spiritual gathering.
