Infosys Ltd. has confirmed that over 300 employees were let go, responding to earlier reports alleging forceful termination. The company clarified that the layoffs, which mainly involved freshers at the Mysuru campus, were not forced but were the result of failure to clear internal onboarding tests. This follows allegations from the IT employees’ union NITES, which claimed that nearly 700 freshers were abruptly let go just months after being hired.
NITES also raised concerns that the freshers had been made to sign confidentiality agreements, suggesting a suppression of the true details surrounding the layoffs. Infosys has defended its actions, stating that the terminations are in line with contractual agreements and the company's hiring policies. A severance letter obtained by NDTV Profit outlined the terms of the layoffs and the requirement for employees to sign confidentiality agreements.
This development comes amid a broader discussion about work culture in India. Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy had previously expressed his view that the youth of India should work 70 hours a week to raise productivity levels, a statement that sparked widespread criticism on social media for being anti-work-life balance.
