In a significant boost to Telangana’s aviation infrastructure, the central government has officially approved the development of Mamnoor Airport in Warangal, marking it as the state’s second airport. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu emphasized that Warangal holds immense potential to become a key regional hub, benefiting trade, tourism, and employment. The approval ends a long-standing restriction due to GMR Hyderabad Airport’s exclusivity clause, which previously prohibited another airport within a 150-km radius for 25 years. With this green light, the Telangana government has already initiated land acquisition, allocating Rs 205 crore for 280.30 acres, ensuring that the facility can accommodate Airbus 320 and Boeing 737 category aircraft.
Mamnoor Airport has historical significance, dating back to the Nizam era when it was operational and played a crucial role during the Indo-China war. The airstrip, which spans 696 acres, was once a crucial part of Warangal’s transport infrastructure but had remained underutilized for decades. The state’s Roads & Buildings Minister, Komatireddy Venkata Reddy, played a crucial role in securing a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the GMR group, paving the way for the airport’s revival. This decision is expected to open new avenues for economic growth by enhancing air connectivity, attracting business investments, and boosting tourism in the region.
The airport project aligns with the Indian government’s vision of strengthening regional connectivity under the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which aims to make air travel accessible to smaller cities. The revival of Mamnoor Airport will reduce dependence on Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and provide a direct alternative for passengers traveling to northern and eastern Telangana. The upgraded airport will improve logistics, enabling faster movement of goods and making Warangal a more attractive destination for industries and investors. With the capability to handle larger aircraft, the airport is poised to facilitate direct air routes, enhancing connectivity to metropolitan cities and international destinations.
The Warangal airport’s re-establishment is expected to reshape Telangana’s aviation sector, positioning the city as a major travel and economic hub. This move will not only provide convenience to travelers but also spur infrastructure development around the region. Real estate, hospitality, and commercial sectors are likely to witness a surge in investments, generating new employment opportunities. As Telangana progresses with its vision of infrastructural growth, Mamnoor Airport’s development stands as a milestone that will redefine Warangal’s role in the state’s economic future. With government backing and a strong commitment to regional connectivity, Mamnoor Airport is set to take off as a crucial aviation asset for Telangana.
