The alarming levels of pollution in Delhi have reached a crisis point, particularly highlighted by the aftermath of Diwali, when the Air Quality Index (AQI) soared to a staggering 999 in several areas of the city and the National Capital Region (NCR). A survey conducted by LocalCircles, which garnered over 21,000 responses from residents across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, revealed that 69% of families report at least one member experiencing health issues related to pollution.
Key findings from the survey indicate that 69% of families are dealing with symptoms such as sore throat or cough, while 62% report at least one member experiencing burning sensations in their eyes. Additionally, 46% have individuals suffering from a runny nose or congestion. Other reported symptoms include breathing difficulties or asthma (31%), headaches (31%), anxiety or concentration difficulties (23%), and difficulty sleeping (15%).
Interestingly, the survey showed a significant increase in health complaints compared to a similar survey conducted on October 19, shortly after the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)-1. The percentage of individuals suffering from sore throats or coughs rose from 36% to 69% in just two weeks.
Despite the health crisis, only 23% of respondents indicated they would use air purifiers to combat the pollution, while an equal number stated they would simply "live with it." Additionally, 15% of families plan to wear masks when outdoors and increase their intake of immunity-boosting foods. The percentage of families opting for air purifiers has seen a slight increase from 18% to 23% since the previous survey.
As pollution levels continue to pose serious health risks, the public’s response highlights the urgent need for effective measures to address this environmental crisis.
