A political war of words broke out in Delhi on April 5, 2025, between the BJP and AAP following the petition filed by Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan, who challenged the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 in the Supreme Court. Khan, a prominent member of AAP and former Chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board, has raised concerns that the Bill limits religious and cultural autonomy of Muslims, introduces arbitrary executive interference, and threatens minority rights in managing religious and charitable institutions.
In contrast, the BJP accused Khan of using the court petition for publicity and as a means to appease voters. Praveen Shankar Kapoor, a spokesperson for Delhi BJP, emphasized that Khan no longer holds the position of Chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board, implying that his challenge was a personal one rather than an official stance. Kapoor further alleged that the petition stemmed from Khan’s fear of corruption charges being exposed from his tenure.
Khan has a history of controversies, including a money laundering case related to the Delhi Waqf Board, and a scuffle with the police in February 2025 during an attempted arrest. Despite these allegations, Khan won the Okhla constituency in the Delhi Assembly elections for the third consecutive time, defeating BJP’s Manish Chaudhary by a substantial margin.
The situation has sparked strong reactions from both parties, with AAP expressing concern over the Bill’s potential to undermine minority governance, while the BJP seeks to highlight Khan’s alleged corruption during his time as Waqf Board Chairman.
