India Rejects Canadian Report on Election Interference, Accuses Ottawa of Meddling
In a sharp rebuttal to allegations of election interference, India has dismissed a report by the Canadian Commission that accuses New Delhi of attempting to influence Canada’s electoral process. Instead, the Indian government has turned the tables, criticizing Ottawa for meddling in India’s internal affairs and fostering an environment conducive to "illegal migration" and "organized criminal activities."
India's Strong Response to Canadian Allegations
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a firm statement rejecting the commission’s claims, stating, "It is in fact Canada which has been consistently interfering in India's internal affairs. This has also created an environment for illegal migration and organized criminal activities. We reject the report's insinuations on India and expect that the support system enabling illegal migration will not be further countenanced."
The report, led by Commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue, alleges that India might have used proxy agents to secretly provide financial support to preferred candidates during Canada’s 2021 elections. It further claims that India ranks as the second most active foreign entity engaging in electoral interference in Canada.
Additionally, the report accuses India of employing disinformation as a key tool in its alleged interference efforts. It also acknowledges the challenges in bilateral relations, citing India's concerns over Khalistani separatism as a significant factor.
Tensions Escalate Amid Strained India-Canada Ties
The report marks the latest flashpoint in the already strained relationship between India and Canada. Tensions escalated sharply in 2023 when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that Indian agents were involved in the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The situation worsened when Canada claimed that Indian diplomats were "persons of interest" in the Nijjar murder investigation. In response, India withdrew these diplomats and expelled six Canadian diplomats from the country, further exacerbating diplomatic tensions.
Despite the Canadian inquiry's claims of foreign interference, it found no evidence that any Canadian parliamentarians colluded with foreign governments to manipulate elections.
As diplomatic ties between the two nations remain fragile, this latest report is expected to add further strain to India-Canada relations.
