Trapped in the web of stringent US immigration policies under Donald Trump, these migrants were sent back to India on a US military aircraft, their dreams shattered and their families burdened with crippling debt.
The Cost of the American Dream
Many deportees, primarily from Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat, spent between ₹30-50 lakh on travel agents who assured them of work visas and legal entry into the US. Instead, they were trafficked through Brazil, Colombia, Panama, and Mexico, enduring weeks of extreme hardship.
Harvinder Singh from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, was promised a legal visa but was instead abandoned in Brazil. His journey turned into a nightmare—trekking through mountains for two days and surviving a treacherous boat ride to the Mexico border, where he witnessed fellow migrants die of exhaustion and starvation.
Sukhpal Singh from Jalandhar, Punjab, recalled walking 45 km through steep valleys, seeing the lifeless bodies of injured migrants left behind.
Jaspal Singh, another deportee, described the humiliation of being handcuffed throughout the flight back to India—an unimaginable contrast to the freedom he once dreamed of.
Families Drowning in Debt
Back in India, devastated families are struggling with the financial ruin caused by the failed migration attempts. Many sold land, mortgaged homes, or took out high-interest loans—only to be left with nothing.
