The Indian government has officially sanctioned the Kedarnath ropeway project, a long-anticipated initiative aimed at improving accessibility to one of India’s most revered pilgrimage sites. The 12.9-kilometer ropeway will significantly cut travel time for thousands of devotees visiting Kedarnath each year. Currently, the trek or mule ride to the temple takes around 8-9 hours, but once operational, the ropeway will complete the journey in just 36 minutes. The Kedarnath ropeway project is being developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model, with an estimated investment of Rs 4,081.28 crore. The initiative aims to facilitate safer, faster, and more convenient access to the Kedarnath temple, particularly for elderly pilgrims and those with mobility challenges.The government has also approved the Hemkund Sahib ropeway, another major project intended to reduce travel time for devotees visiting the revered Sikh pilgrimage site. Key Features of the Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib Ropeway Projects

The Kedarnath ropeway, which will connect Sonprayag to Kedarnath, is set to become one of the world’s longest high-altitude ropeways, operating at an elevation of 3,583 meters above sea level. The project is designed to carry up to 3,600 passengers per hour in both directions, significantly easing congestion on the trekking route. This development will ensure that more pilgrims can visit the shrine without facing the difficulties posed by extreme weather conditions and challenging terrain.The Hemkund Sahib ropeway, another transformative project, will connect Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib over a distance of 12.4 kilometers. The estimated cost for the Hemkund Sahib ropeway is Rs 2,730.13 crore, and it is expected to improve access to religious and natural attractions in Uttarakhand.
