Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena has ordered an investigation into the allegations made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attempted to poach its candidates ahead of the Delhi Assembly election results, set to be announced on February 8, 2024. The investigation comes after AAP accused the BJP of trying to lure 16 of its candidates with promises of ministerial positions and Rs 15 crore each if they defected. The controversy unfolded when AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal made a social media post claiming that BJP had reached out to his party’s candidates, allegedly offering lucrative deals in exchange for switching parties. Kejriwal questioned the authenticity of exit polls predicting a BJP win and suggested the BJP's actions were part of a broader strategy to destabilize AAP.
In response, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP candidate from Kalkaji, Atishi, also weighed in, questioning why the BJP would attempt defections if they were truly confident of winning. She expressed concerns over the manipulation of exit polls to demoralize AAP candidates and create an atmosphere of defections. The BJP, in turn, dismissed AAP's allegations as defamatory and designed to tarnish its image before the election results. However, the Lt Governor's office responded by sanctioning a formal investigation through the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The ACB team visited Arvind Kejriwal's residence in Civil Lines to question him about the matter.Polling for the 70 Delhi Assembly seats concluded on February 7, with the final vote count scheduled for Saturday. The results will reveal if AAP secures a third consecutive term or if the BJP manages to end its long wait for power in the capital.
