In response to the government's request, IndiGo has decided to reduce airfares for flights to Prayagraj by 30-50%, a move aimed at making travel more affordable during the ongoing Kumbh Mela. This decision follows consultations between airlines and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which urged the carriers to adjust their pricing and increase their flight capacities to accommodate the massive influx of devotees.
The Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13, is expected to attract around 45 crore devotees by its conclusion on February 26. To support this, the government has authorized an additional 81 flights to the Prayagraj route, bringing the total monthly seat capacity to 80,000. The major "snan" days, particularly on January 29, February 3, 4, 12, and 26, are expected to see a significant surge in demand.
In addition to IndiGo, other airlines such as Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air were also involved in the discussions and have adjusted their services accordingly. The government's efforts to rationalize airfares and increase capacity are aimed at ensuring smooth travel for the devotees attending this massive religious event.
