JPMorgan Asset Management Japan has appointed Kaguya Komatsu as its new president, making history as the first woman to hold the role. Komatsu, who currently serves as managing director, will officially take on her new position on March 1, 2024. She has been with the firm since 2011 and has overseen institutional investor and investment trust businesses since 2024. Before joining JPMorgan, Komatsu held various positions, including roles at Fitch Ratings Japan, Merrill Lynch Japan Securities, Deutsche Securities, and the Financial Services Agency.
Her promotion comes as Japan continues to tackle its gender disparity in management roles and wage gaps. Despite being an advanced economy, Japan ranks 118th among 146 nations in terms of gender equity, with only 4% of Nikkei 225 companies having women in C-suite positions. Komatsu's appointment is a significant milestone, reflecting a gradual but positive shift towards addressing the gender gap in Japan's corporate sector.
Shoichi Okoshi, the current president, will transition to the role of chairman. This leadership change at JPMorgan Asset Management Japan comes at a time when the country is under pressure to improve female representation in top business roles and reduce the gender wage gap, which remains the largest among advanced economies, with women earning 79% of what men make on average.
Komatsu's promotion is seen as a bright spot in Japan's efforts to encourage more women into leadership positions, especially in the financial sector.
