Indian cricket team spinner R. Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket after the third Test match against Australia in Brisbane on Wednesday. Ashwin, who played a pivotal role in India’s rise to the top of Test cricket, made the announcement during a joint press conference with captain Rohit Sharma, after the game ended in a draw. Ashwin, with 537 wickets in 106 Test matches, is the second-highest wicket-taker for India, following only Anil Kumble's record of 619 wickets.
Though Ashwin will retire from international cricket, he will continue playing in T20 tournaments, including representing Chennai Super Kings in the 2025 IPL. His remarkable contributions in both Test and limited-overs cricket have solidified his legacy. Ashwin's career includes significant achievements: in ODIs, he played 116 matches and took 156 wickets, while in T20Is, he claimed 72 wickets across 65 matches. Ashwin was known for his mastery in spin bowling, making substantial contributions to India’s dominance in Test cricket from 2014 to 2019.
