Google is set to collaborate with Taiwan's MediaTek to develop the next generation of its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which are expected to launch next year. This strategic move signifies a shift in Google’s approach to AI chip development, although the tech giant will continue working with its current chip partner, Broadcom. According to a report by The Information, Google’s partnership with MediaTek is largely driven by cost efficiency and MediaTek’s strong alliance with TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). Google’s decision to involve MediaTek stems from MediaTek’s ability to provide AI chips at lower costs compared to Broadcom. By leveraging TSMC’s advanced chip fabrication capabilities, Google aims to strengthen its AI hardware infrastructure for improved performance and scalability.
Despite this new partnership, Google will maintain ties with Broadcom, which has played a key role in the development of Google’s earlier TPU models. Google launched its sixth-generation TPU late last year, offering an alternative to Nvidia chips for both internal AI research and Google Cloud customers. The move helps Google reduce dependency on Nvidia, a dominant player in the AI semiconductor industry. According to research firm Omdia, Google invested between $6 billion and $9 billion in TPUs last year, highlighting the company’s aggressive push to expand its AI hardware capabilities.
