Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has made serious allegations against the BJP-led Union government, accusing them of diverting Rs 2,512 crore that was allocated for Tamil Nadu’s school children to other states. Stalin claimed that this action was in retaliation for Tamil Nadu's refusal to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the controversial three-language policy.The accusations have ignited a political battle between Stalin and K Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu chief of the BJP. Stalin stated that the Centre was using education funds as a tool of coercion, punishing Tamil Nadu's students for standing firm against the NEP. He argued that the Rs 2,512 crore meant for Tamil Nadu’s students was unfairly redirected to other states as a means of political retribution.
Stalin's government had previously opposed the PM SHRI scheme, which mandates the adoption of the NEP and the three-language policy. The Chief Minister accused the Centre of using these educational policies to punish states that do not comply, portraying it as a political move that undermines the educational rights of Tamil Nadu's students.In response, Annamalai dismissed Stalin’s claims as false. He argued that Tamil Nadu could not receive funds for a scheme that it had not implemented. Annamalai also criticized the state government for the decline in Tamil Nadu’s education standards, particularly in numeracy and language proficiency. He accused Stalin of politicizing education and depriving the state's children of equal opportunities.
Annamalai also highlighted that Tamil Nadu had committed in March 2023 to implementing all aspects of the Samagra Shiksha program, including the PM SHRI scheme, starting from the 2024 academic year. He questioned Stalin about whether this commitment had been made, implying that the state had agreed to the scheme despite its earlier opposition.Furthermore, Annamalai pointed out that 35 of 36 states and Union Territories had not yet received their allocated funds for 2024-25 under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), which cast doubt on Stalin’s allegations of a specific fund diversion targeting Tamil Nadu.The exchange between Stalin and Annamalai highlights the ongoing political tension between the state government and the Centre over the implementation of the NEP and the broader education policy framework.
