It has been two days since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a massive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule in the capital. Despite the victory, the BJP has yet to announce its Chief Ministerial candidate, leading to speculation and multiple names circulating as potential choices. Among the front-runners is Parvesh Verma, who gained national attention after defeating AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat. Verma, a former two-time Member of Parliament (MP) from West Delhi and son of former Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, has emerged as a strong contender. Other names being considered include Satish Upadhyay, the newly elected MLA from Malviya Nagar and former Delhi BJP president, senior leader Vijender Gupta, newly elected Janakpuri MLA Ashish Sood, and Uttam Nagar legislator Pawan Sharma. However, the BJP is known for its ability to surprise when it comes to selecting top leaders.
There is also growing speculation that the BJP might consider a woman MLA for the post of Chief Minister. Among the 48 newly elected BJP legislators, four are women: Neelam Pahalwan, Rekha Gupta, Poonam Sharma, and Shikha Roy. Pahalwan, who made history as the first woman MLA from the Najafgarh seat, along with the others, has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the top post. Additionally, BJP sources have hinted that caste considerations will play a key role, with several newly elected MLAs from the Scheduled Caste, such as Raj Kumar Chauhan, Ravikant Ujjain, Ravinder Indraj Singh, and Kailash Gangwal, potentially in the running for the position.
Following the BJP’s victory, top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP president JP Nadda discussed the next steps for government formation. Although the Prime Minister is set to depart for the US, sources indicate that the swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister will likely take place after his return. In what will mark the BJP's return to power in Delhi after 26 years, the party is planning a grand event, with Chief Ministers of all NDA-ruled states expected to be invited.
